The name Phoenixalis (Ju huang) comes from the “Classic of Mountains and Rivers” (Shan Hai Jing) where it is given the name Qu niao, sometimes written Ju niao. Here, the artist attempts to further develop the chaotic mysticism of this classic through personal understanding, incorporating disintegrating texts, a plummeting aeroplane and enormous, surrealistic hands to resonate with the portents and essential resilience of the Phoenixalis itself.
