: You have painted plants, fruits, clothes, and all kinds of insignificant inanimate objects. Why do your creations feature \\\"still life\\\" but not \\\"people\\\"?
Feng Hanting: In fact, several people have noticed this point before, and I have provided different answers to similar questions. However, as time has passed and people\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s mindsets have evolved, I can now briefly explain my thoughts with my current perspective. In truth, I did not intentionally avoid depicting \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"people\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in my creations, nor did I deliberately focus on painting \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"still life.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" It just so happened that I was drawn to such subjects or themes. If these questions had not been raised repeatedly, I might not have given this issue much thought. But since people have been paying attention to this for a long time, there must be some underlying or profound reason influencing my work. For example, I enjoy shopping very much, paying attention to the materials of the products, as well as the various aspects of items that women might use. Although I do not paint or create specific individuals in my works, my creations are still about \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"people\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"—encompassing human relationships, emotions, and more. I am not opposed to directly painting or creating \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"people\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"; perhaps I will in the future, but it is not certain.
: Is your online name \\\"Erduomei\\\"? Also, you mentioned last time that in the artwork title \\\"Tiny Sun\\\"series, Jiaojiao is actually your name as well. Why do you have so many names?
Feng Hanting: Nothing special, it\\\'s just a random online name I came up with, and it happens to be my Weibo handle. However, names hold significant importance in my work. Catherine was the name I used when I was learning French. Now, I go by Cathy.
: Maybe all the names in the “Romantic Novels” are the names you want to use.
Feng Hanting:
Not entirely. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Name\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" has always been a key factor in my works. This \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"name\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" is the title of the work as well as the \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"name\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" of various characters. For example, the various girls\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' names in the “Romantic Novels” series of works (both Chinese and English are equally important), and the \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Jiaojiao\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Tiny Sun\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\".
There are many reasons why I enjoy using a variety of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"names\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" for naming and creating. The first reason is that a name represents an identity, a code name, and a role. The second reason stems from my love of literature and movies. Traditional storytelling always involves characters and roles. The third reason is inspired by role-playing games. Paper doll dress-up games also carry this meaning, and the bride in \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"New Moon Bride\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" is a super classic role. The fourth reason is that I need this second \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"identity\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" to conceal my real \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"identity\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in daily life. It\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s nothing secret or special, just a way to protect my privacy, such as the information on mail deliveries.
Another way to present my creations is through subtlety—I prefer not to directly reveal the essence of things but to convey them in a more nuanced manner. It’s akin to the way Oriental cultures use screens and traces, creating a sense of intrigue and depth. Although my works are contemporary, and contemporary art is largely rooted in Western traditions, my personality and aesthetic sensibilities remain distinctly Oriental, shaped by an Oriental way of thinking.
: I know you enjoy reading novels and watching movies very much, and these interests greatly influence your art practice. I remember you painted the cover for the novels of French novelist Jean-Philippe Toussaint. Therefore, \\\"My Name is Catherine\\\" also carries a strong cinematic atmosphere. Why did you choose to create it in this way?
Feng Hanting:
\\\"My Name is Catherine\\\" is all about capturing the mindset of a housewife. Catherine might seem like your average housewife, but she’s actually really beautiful and full of dreams. She doesn’t want her elegance and charm to get lost in the everyday grind of family life—kind of like Madame Bovary. Deep down, she’s got all these desires, all sorts of them, which is why she loves watching movies. They show her the kind of life she wishes she had. It’s similar to how Madame Bovary was obsessed with romantic novels, dreaming of being swept away by passionate love and fancy parties... Neither of them could stand the boring, ordinary day-to-day life.
Because I want to explore different mediums in my work, not just limit myself to painting. In fact, if you look at Western art history, ever since Duchamp\\\'s urinal, all mediums and forms have been open for creating art. This is even more true today—take Cattelan\\\'s banana, for example. However, my approach to creation is still a bit different from theirs. Text itself can stand alone as a work of art, and the act of handwriting it adds a performative element. You could call it a text-based work or consider it performance art. It really depends on how the artist defines it.
